Back in the days when we had just
one TV station and kids had to bath and dress before being allowed to enter a room to watch TV or movies, there were some movies or TV shows
(series) which the whole of Ghana
loved (both old and young). Today
we take you back through some of
the old movies and TV shows that
always kept people glued to their
TV’s and which even today, people
are still yearning and wouldn’t miss
the opportunity to watch them again and again.
I TOLD YOU SO
This was obviously Ghana’s first
comic movie and it is hilarious. The popularity of the movie lead to the producer Kwaw Ansah, converting it from the traditional Video cassette format to a VCD. The movie was uploaded unto video sharing site youtube a year ago and it has received 229,597 views. Good old days…..
DIABOLO
Diabolo was Ghana’s version of the Indiana Jones horror flicks. It was.different, it tackled the real life
situation where people go for money rituals and how women are mostly used by these men as sacrifices. Itdepicted a man who changes into a snake to sleep with his women in order to get money. It was a movie that we normally closed our eyes to watch when the snake appears but we will never miss watching it.
INSPECTOR BEDIAKO
You could call it “CSI-GHANA”, our
very own investigative series.
Inspector Bediako was a series to
watch. I don’t know anyone from
around that time who didn’t watch or hear of Inspector Bediako. The way they carried out investigations to unravel the truth behind crimes was just professional. When are we going to have another series like this. Hmmmmmm
TAXI DRIVER
It’s just that, nothing much to say.
You need to watch an episode of this series to feel the vibe. Those who watched it can attest to the fact that it beats all the comic series we have now. Chorkor Trotro doesn’t come a shade close to this, trust me. It featured the life of a rich Taxi owner, Master Richard and his.employee taxi driver TT. Depicted typical car owner, driver relations plus the activities that take place inside taxi’s daily. This series also unearthed or brought to the fore Papa Nii Papafio, aka the Papacy or Osophageous. He “killed” viewers each time with his big english and incomprehensive grammar. We love you Papa Nii Papafio.
HERITAGE AFRICA
Heritage Africa is a political drama set in 1955, and follows the conversion of the first black District Commissioner prior to independence in Ghana.
The movie presents a diffused
political analysis with powerful acting and a tight script which makes interesting viewing with the complex pains and ironies of colonialism. It’s a Kwaw Ansah film so what can we say, it can’t go wrong.
THINGS WE DO FOR LOVE
This series unearthed many of our
current movie stars. Talk of Majid
Michel, Jackie Appiah, Adjetey Annan
etc. It was a youth centered series
which dealt with the day-to-day
activities of the youth. The good, the bad and the ugly. It was a series that people followed from radio until it hit the screens. It was a never to be
missed series and to this day, there
is no competitor to what “Things We Do For Love” offered viewers and the Ghanaian entertainment scene.
NIKO AND SEKINA
This was our first Bollywood inspired
movie. Told the story of a rich boy
who fell in love with a poor tribal
marked girl. The boys mother did
everything within her power to split
the two apart. What actually got
people interested in this movie was the singing aspect. The love birds always sung when they met. “Niko oooo, Niko o ooo, I love from the bottom of my heart, I love you from the bottom of my heart, oh Nikooo, Oh Nikooo…Sekinaaaaa…….. sing
along if you remember.
