The women’s organizer of the
National Democratic Congress (NDC),
Anita Desoso, has been put on a ‘no-
fly list’ to the United States of
America (USA).
This came to light after she was
prevented from traveling to the USA
at the Kotoka International Airport on
Monday.
Anita Desoso who is also a Deputy
Coordinator of the National Disaster
Management Organization (NADMO) is
said to have been declared a
potential security risk after she left
threatening voicemails to a US
citizen, Michelle McGowan.
Michelle McGowan; a nurse and a
philanthropist came to Ghana to help
three children from the Northern
region who suffered from a strange
skin disease locally known as
Alligator skin
But there were reports of a stand-off
between her and Anita which led to
the said threatening voicemails.
According to media reports,
McGowan was subsequently arrested
and forced to leave Ghana on the
advice of the American Embassy.
Speaking on Accra based radio
station Adom FM, Michelle Mcgowan
admitted reporting the matter to the
FBI and the State Department of
Diplomatic Relations upon her return
to the USA and after a series of
investigations, Madam Desoso landed
herself on the ‘no-fly list’.
She explained that she is not directly
responsibile for the ban placed on
Madam Desoso but the threats she
received were reported.
“I was afraid for my life and the FBI
requested the audio, they took the
audio, they forwarded it to the State
Department and they did an
investigation,” she narrated.
Michelle Mcgowan was later informed
that the Anti-corruption Squad in the
USA had detected Madam Desoso and
subsequently cancelled her visa.
“I believe the threats she made
towards me are the catalyst for the
investigation but the threats alone
were not the reasons why she had
her visa cancelled,” she remarked.
The no-fly list is created and
maintained by the US government’s
Terrorist Screening Centre (TSC) for
people who are not permitted to
board a commercial aircraft for travel
in or out of the United States.
The no-fly list, which was
established in 2003 after the
September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks
in the USA , bars those on it from
flying within the United States or to
and from the country.
