The ECG FactSheet

Saw this somewhere
1. 12% of its customers are
classified as 'commercial'. These
folks pay 56% of all tariffs.
2. ECG is projected to make a
$100m loss this year.
3. This year, ECG will lose about
$250m in distribution waste alone.
4. Though ECG distributes 90% of
all the energy generated in Ghana,
only 36% of households in Ghana
are customers.
5. Half of ECG's customers pay only
1% of its annual revenue.
6. ECG's revenue has declined for 4
years straight.
7. ECG's debts to suppliers are
about one-third of its gross
revenue.
8. ECG requires $580m in a 3-year
maintenance program to stem
losses and improve efficiency.
9. Any privatisation program cannot
take less than 3 years due to the
capital risks and overall sums
involved.
10. It is interesting to study the
experiences of the power
privatisation program in Nigeria.
There, the government's cost for
worker retrenchment totaled $2.4b.
The difference in Nigeria though is
that privatisation in Nigeria
involved the entire power system
and not just the distribution
element alone, as experts
concluded that such partial re-
organisation would only lead to
complications further on.
