Ghana finished in the 25th position
at the World Cup following the
tournament ranking released by
FIFA at the end of the competition
on Brazil.
The Black Stars finished as fourth
among the five African countries at
the competition with Cameroon
being the only country in Africa
beneath the Ghanaians.
However, Ghana finished ahead of
world football giants England who
were ranked in the 26th position.
But this is Ghana’s worst showing
in its three-time history in the
global football competition after
going beyond the group stage in
2006 and 2010 World Cup.
Ghana were seventh in the previous
tournament in South Africa in 2010
and were also Africa’s best team in
the competition.
Their 25th position means they
only finished ahead of Cameroon
who were bottom of the pack at the
32nd position.
Algeria was Africa’s best side in
14th followed by Nigeria at 16th
with Ivory Coast in the 21st
position.
The Black Stars could only garner
one point in Group G after losing
its opening match 2-1 against the
USA, drawing 2-2 against Germany
and losing 2-1 to Portugal to finish
their campaign in disappointing
fashion.
Ironically, Ghana were the only side
to have held eventual champions
Germany who topped the poll by
the world governing body with 19
points.
They edged second-placed
Argentina with one point while
Holland were ranked third.
